The High Score

The High Score

Knoxville Music Scene band The High Score's new album, We Showed Up to Leave, is another hit -- at least as far as their fans are concerned.

On a 13-song CD, there are only 4 tracks that I didn't immediately like -- way better than average for an indie rock record.

Tracks that stand out include the opening track, "Back Tonight," which shows off their pop sensibility with an amazingly-catchy chorus and their usual edgy guitar rock. Chris Cook's "I'm Not Real" has a creepy vibe that will resonate with a lot of disaffected rockers out there. "Classic Rock" shows off some great dual-guitar leads, a la old-school Skynard.

Other tracks I love include "Roky Erickson," "Ringing in Our Ears," "Kick the Door," and "We're Not Like You."

In addition to this new album, High Score has been on a roll lately. Their first album, Sexy Loosers, came out to critical acclaim. They got a gig as the backup band for singer-songwriter Mic Harrison and toured big cities across the country with him; they hooked up with Brad Henderson, the hippest drummer in Knoxville; and their CD release party for We Showed Up to Leave was at the Corner Lounge, for which they produced one of my favorite gig posters of all time (above).

The CD release party was great. The Southern rock dual leads, Robby Trosper jumping around on stage like some nefarious cell-phone on vibrate, and Mic Harrison joined in as a third guitarist.

Watching High Score should inspire any would-be rocker to give it their all when they're on stage. If you're a wanna-be or just like good live rock, you should really check their next Knoxville music scene gig out.
