The New Spiceorium
Spices Up South Knoxville

The Spiceorium

This Knoxville Business Mom and Pop story is about The Spiceorium, 5901 Chapman Highway, which is a new mom and pop store in South Knoxville, about 3 miles South down Chapman Highway from the Henley Street Bridge.

Entrepreneur husband and wife team Michael and Tricia Bogdal opened the shop in May after relocating to Knoxville from Florida.

The first thing I noticed when I stopped in for my first visit was the amazing odor of fresh spices and herbs. I could have just walked around in that store all day and been happy to do nothing but sniff!

Ms. Bogdal was very welcoming and excited to talk with me about her products and what got her and Michael started in their spicey new mom and pop venture.

"My husband Michael and I did a lot of research on what type of business we should open," said Tricia. "I love cooking with good spices, and we did a lot of research to see if there was another store like us in Knoxville. We didn't find one in Knoxville, so we said, 'let's open a spice shop!' And that's how we opened the Spiceorium."

A spice rack in the Spiceorium The Spiceorium specializes in fresh spices, herbs, teas and offers a wide variety of hot sauces for those of us who enjoy spicing up our own bar-b-q. You'll also find spice grinding bowls, cook books and other items related to the store's focus.

Ms. Bogdal offered me a free cup of her favorite tea and a taste of the new smoked paprika that the store will begin offering in late July, and we talked about the various products that she offered.

"I'm completely open to adding new spices, herbs and teas to the store's products. We're going to try out the new smoked paprika -- it's great on salmon -- and smoked salt this month. It's not made with that horrible liquid smoke; it's really smoked over a fire, and they choose the right woods for a great flavor."

When I asked how business was going, she said people have been excited about the store, and business has been good. "People are still just finding out about us, but generally when they do, they say, 'I've been waiting for a store like this to open in Knoxville forever!' They're excited."

It was easy to see that Ms. Bogdal was excited about her spicey new business, too. She loves the products, experiments with them in her own kitchen, and offers a wide variety of spices for her customers.

Now that you know about the Spiceorium, come on down to this fun mom and pop store to fill up your spice cupboard with new, fresh spices and herbs for the best cooking of your life, and feel good about supporting our new mom and pop entrepreneurs in South Knoxville.
