Great Smoky Arts and Crafts Community
The Great Smoky Arts and Crafts Community is almost as amazing as the beautiful mountains that attracted and inspire the artists who have lived and worked there since 1937. It is the largest group of independent artisans in North America, and one of the largest in the world.Members offer Smoky Mountain pictures and paintings, as well as books, quilts, drawings, sculpture, pottery, and much, much more. All the arts and crafts are made in the community and sold in one of the dozens of member stores along the loop. You can watch the artisans work in many of the shops, and in some cases can even commission works by world-renowned artists on the spot! I can’t recommend enough that you make the Great Smoky Arts and Crafts Community a part of your itinerary the next time you go to the Smokies. Most stores are owned by the artists who stocked them. If you have a love for Mom and Pop like I do, you’ll quickly understand that this is not just one of the largest artist communities in the world; it’s one of the largest – and last – Mom & Pop communities left in the United States. It makes me all warm and fuzzy inside just to be so close to such an awesome multitude of independent, entrepreneurial, artistic spirits all within one 8-mile loop! The Easiest Directions to Great Smoky Arts and Crafts Community from Knoxville are: The Arrowmont School of Arts and CraftsThe Arrowmont School was founded in 1912 as Settlement School by Phi Beta Pi Fraternity for Women to bring education, business development skills and healthcare to Gatlinburg – then a rural outpost of Tennessee. After public schools were opened in the area, the Settlement School became Arrowmont and began offering arts and crafts courses that were very well received. Arrowmont is now an internationally-renowned arts and crafts school with world-class instructors, and the most beautiful natural surroundings I’ve ever encountered as its backdrop and inspiration. You can take classes there yourself – they offer photography, painting, drawing, clay, glass, weaving, and much more – or if learning how to take your own Smoky Mountain pictures isn’t your thing, treat yourself to a walk through one or all of their amazing student and instructor art galleries (there are 3). Prices are reasonable, and the creativity, quality, and Appalachian charm you’ll find in the stores and exhibits make for a great afternoon of browsing and sopping! Take it from me: this is one Smoky Mountain Arts & Crafts stop you’ll enjoy thoroughly.
