Open Mic Venues in Knoxville
Knoxville Business noticed recently that several folks are looking for open mic venues in the Knoxville Music Scene. So, we decided to make a page dedicated to that, and try to play each of them and write a review.
Though we don't list all of them here, we do try to list the most prominent open mics here, covering a wide area geographically and in terms of style of those who are playing.
The Corner LoungeWhen: Wednesday nights at 8 p.m. Specialty: electric jamsI've started my open mic venues list with The Corner because it's one of my favorite places to play and hear music in Knoxville. It isn't as swanky as some other places, but with the possible exception of the Pilot Light, no other place is more rock-n-roll! This electric open mic is typically preceded by a 7 p.m. set by Greg Horne, local guitar guru and singer-songwriter. Bring your instrument. Mics, amps, chords and drums are usually already set up. NOTE: 7/2/06 I heard a rumor last evening that The Corner's open mic may be on vacation for the summer. So give them a call before you show up with your instrument.
The Preservation PubWhen: Tuesday nights at 9 p.m. Specialty: acoustic singer-songwriters Very Cool Benefit: Cash & Prizes! The Preservation Pub's open mic is perhaps the best-known one in Knoxville. Located on Market Square, it's certainly one in a great location. I've played the PP's open mic a couple times, though not recently. It's always packed with people, and they're generally very appreciative of your efforts. And of course, now they have a "new and improved" open mic that offers cash and prizes for the best performers. Knoxville-based singer-songwriters are very excited that the Pub has picked up this idea from the famous Eddie's Attic open mic in Atlanta.
Sassy Anne's House of BluesWhen: Wednesday nights at 9 p.m. Specialty: Blues jamAs open mic venues go, Sassy Anne's House of Blues is a great one. It's in a great old Victorian house in the historic 4th and Gill neighborhood. All you need is your instrument and the desire to jam with some fabulous blues musicians. When I say fabulous, I mean it. You're just as likely to play beside a big-name blues musician as you are to play beside a Knoxville wannabe, so be prepared to be second fiddle if that's your current level. I'm a second-fiddler myself, but I'm really looking forward to playing this blues jam soon!
The Stir Fry Cafe & Art Bar at Turkey CreekWhen: Thursdays at 9 p.m.This is a nice venue for an open mic. People went outside to smoke, so the restaurant just smelled like good Thai food. If you've ever tried to sing in a room full of smoke, you know the benefit of that feature. The evening I played was MC'd by singer-songwriter Kirk Fleta. His wackiness, talent, and sweet puppy, Brain (who enjoyed the music as it was piped outside), set a nice tone for the evening. And for the most part, everybody sat back, enjoyed a drink, and listened. That's always nice for an open mic.
