Krutch Park and Market Square
In 1981, Krutch Park was created when Charles Krutch, a quiet man who experienced moderate fame as a staff-photographer for TVA in the 40s and 50s, donated $1.3 million dollars for a “quiet retreat with trees, shrubs, flowers, and other plantings for the pleasure and health of the public.” That donation translated into a sizeable plot of land in the middle of downtown Knoxville with 29 Willow Oaks, 18 Bradford Pears, 5 Red Maples, 10 Washington Hawthorns, 4 Southern Magnolias, 13 Dogwoods, 6 White Pines, 5 Saucer Magnolias...
...36 Foster Hollies, 2 Japanese Red Maples, 3 River Birch, 1 Ohio Buckeye, 7 Honey Locusts, 4 Scarlet Oaks, 3 Redbuds, 1 Blue Spruce, 39 Nellie R. Stevens Hollies and a prominent Weeping Willow next to the creek, to be exact.Known for his artistry – Krutch’s photographs of the development of TVA were shown in New York City’s Museum of Modern Art – few people were aware that Krutch spent much of his free time trading stocks. That pastime turned out to be profitable for him and, due to his love of the City and generosity, to be a boon to thousands of professionals, residents of and visitors to downtown Knoxville.
Located directly downtown on Union Avenue and adjacent to Market Square, Krutch Park was never meant to be a child’s playground. Rather, it was meant to offer a little bit of paradise; it was to be a place for the people who work in downtown to enjoy a few minutes of peace and escape the hustle of work. But now, with the growing popularity of Market Square businesses and events, Krutch Park is becoming a place for families and business people alike to stop and enjoy a park bench in the sun among the trees and running water of the park. The Market Square District has more than just Krutch Park around it; it is a place filled with events, restaurants, and shops. You can find anything from concerts to plays, a farmers’ market to craft shows, and more. Market square is quickly becoming the place in downtown Knoxville to meet, eat, read, celebrate, people watch, shop, or just leisurely spend your afternoon or evening.
A few notable events at Market Square include the Sundown in the City concert series, Shakespeare on the Square, First Friday craft shows and Saturday morning Farmers’ Market. The Square is a completely-renovated plaza with green space, fountains and stage area that is bordered by classic, historical storefronts. Throughout Knoxville’s history, it has served as downtown Knoxville’s market and meeting place. It is accessible by automobile, public transportation (aka – the trolley line), and, of course, by foot. Currently, the City of Knoxville and other area organizations and businesses are working to make the Square more user-friendly and inviting to residents, professionals and visitors. Free parking on nights and weekends in the new city garage next to the Square, updated landscaping, newly-paved streets and new public art are just a few of the recent amenities added to the area. Whether visiting Knoxville or living here, make Market Square and Krutch Park a part of your next Knoxville outing; you’re going to love it!
