Knoxville Fountains:
A Great Kids and Family Activity

Toddlers play in the Market Square fountains

Knoxville fountains are a great source of entertainment for kids and families -- especially on hot days like the one I took these pictures.

We've all been a kid, and most of us have at least wanted to, if not participated in, a good bit of chilly, wet play in public fountains.

The great thing about the downtown Knoxville fountains is that they're actually designed to be played in. Kids love them, as do their adult parents, because there are several more "adult" attractions close by, all over downtown.

Kids have some wet fun in fountains on Gay Street in downtown Knoxville, at the entrance to Krutch Park

For example:

  • shopping at one of the many cool and off-beat stores on Market Square,
  • having a drink at the Preservation Pub or Downtown Grill and Brewery,
  • enjoying a great dinner at the Tomato Head or any of the other dozens of restaurants in downtown,
  • catching some of the best musical acts in the world at the historical Tennessee and Bijou Theatres...

  • ...and much more

There are fountains on Volunteer Landing that are also designed to be played in, and there are those that are more there for looks.

    The fountains at Volunteer Landing

It's easy for parents to tell the difference between the two; just look for the fountains coming out of the sidewalk and let your kids have fun!

Other things you can do while at Volunteer Landing include dinner at the Riverside Tavern or Calhouns, a ride on the Three Rivers Rambler excursion train (a fantastic Knoxville family attraction), or going on a cruise on the Knoxville Star Riverboat.
