Kids Recycle
in Knoxville, Tennessee!
The Knoxville Recycling Coalition pages have some good ideas to help kids recycle.
My favorite is a drop-down tool that kids can look through titled, "Where do I Recycle __ ?". You just click on the drop-down and select the type of item you want to learn about.
Cool!
Yes! Kids recycle in Knoxville, Tennessee.
As a matter of fact, they do it better than a lot of adults. And kids should recycle better than their parents; they've learned about it since infancy from seeing it in practice in their Knoxville homes, daycares, churches and schools. And especially, they learn about it in the classroom from their teachers, with the assistance of excellent corporate business resources like Waste Connections of Tennessee's Recycling Resources for Kids. I looked through the links on this site, and they cover the full gamut of resources a kid needs to learn everything a kid needs to know about recycling. :-) I'll update this page once a week with a brief summary of each link, so you can get quickly to the information you need to help kids recycle in Knoxville, Tennessee!
Kids Recycle: Resources for Children
The EPA's environmental kids club appears targeted to elementary and intermediate-aged kids, but the information is great for any age. The front page is a park scene with links on sign posts and other objects. Look everything over; you might miss something otherwise! The resources are excellent, and very real-world. For example, kids can play games that teach them about life in the Chesapeake Bay, and the tools scientists use to study the environment there. A must-click for kids who are interested in the environment is to join the environmental kids club -- I signed up myself!
Earth 911 for Kids: Environmental games, songs, activities and educational resources
Earth 911's kids pages offer activities for a wide variety of ages -- from elementary through high school, and there are links for teachers on every page.
It isn't as fun-looking as EPA's site, but it's more widely applicable. Very good resource for adults to direct kid's attention to "making every day earth day."
NOTE: On the Waste Connections Kids Recycle page, they link to this page three times; once for kids, once for students, and once for teachers. It's all the same start page.
Kids recycle with EPA's Planet Protector's Club for Kids is a series of games and activities for kids to follow that will help them learn how to create less trash.
Planet Protectors are also taught how to teach others how to reduce, re-use, and recycle.
I like this one because it's a little more narrow in scope, and perhaps a little more results-oriented. Elementary and young middle-school aged kids will like this one for the cool graphics and story lines.
Kids recycle common items to create art with The Imagination Factory.
I'm a BIG fan of this site!
When kids recycle, they may not be sure of why, or may lose interest when they can't see or measure the results on a personal level. The Imagination Factory gives kids a very real, tangible way to enjoy the fruits of their recycling labors.
The ideas for art projects are well-planned and fun, and kids always love using their creativity. Let their imaginations run wild with the possibilities!
NOTE: While, as I've said, I really like this site, the link on the Waste Connections kids' page under the "Students" section is just an ads page. Don't bother with that one.
Kids Recycle: Resources for Students
The EPA Student Center is a resource for students who would like to learn more and apply more of their knowledge of their environment.
This site is geared towards older students -- middle through high school -- though the graphics are a little cartoonish for that age group.
Kids Recycle: There's a great series of pages here on recycling here.
There are even some links for college-aged students, including information about internships and careers.
Kids Recycle: Resources for Teachers
This EPA Teacher Resources page is full of great information and freebies.
Just a few of the goodies offered to teachers here include links for getting grants to build recycling programs for students in your classroom, free materials for the classroom, awards you can apply for, workshops in your area, and more.
