Business for Kids: Dog Walking

by Tamara Howell
(Avon, OH, US)

Kyla with her

Kyla with her "little" guy

My daughter loves dogs, and she is only 12 years old. We live in a large condominium complex in the city with many older people around, as well as many people who have a busy lifestyle.

She started by meeting the dogs and their owners while walking our dogs, and gradually, as they saw how well she related to dogs, people started asking her to take their dogs for a walk when they were ill or unable.

She enjoys making an extra $5 a week for walking smaller dogs, or $10 a week for walking larger dogs (They require longer walks and have higher energy levels.)

She is also great company for the older dog owners. Sometimes she is too busy any more even to walk our two sammies.

Maybe I should pay her to walk her own dogs too!

Kids Business Idea: Doggie Doo-Doo Clean Up

One of the ways for kids to make money is to start a Doggie Doo-Doo Clean Up Business.

I know, I know! The idea sounds kind of disgusting. But that is exactly the reason that it is a good way to make money!

The way it works is that you start by contacting pet owners in your neighborhood and asking them if they would like to have a regularly scheduled (usually 1-2 times a week) Doggie Doo-Doo Clean Up.

If so, agree on a price for your service, when you should be paid, etc. Then, at the scheduled time, you go to the person's house and pick up the doggie doo.

Please be sure to have the pet owner put the pet away when you are working, use an effective scooper, dispose of the waste properly (and wash your hands when you're done).

If you want to be environmentally friendly, you can get a doggie poo septic tank from most major pet store websites, which will allow you to tell your customers that the poop you scoop is disposed of in a sanitary, non-toxic facility.

Also, make sure your parents/guardians know the people you would be working for.

Have fun!

Kidstormer Business Ideas: Pet Caretaker

by Lori
(Naples, FL)

Here's a kid business idea: be a pet caretaker!

Do you like pets-dogs, cats, birds, fish?

Would going to someone's house a few times a day to feed and play with them sound fun?

If so, a pet caretaking business might be for you.

You could post fliers in your neighborhood offering your services for people going out of town for a few days. It would be fun and you would get paid for it too.

KnoxvilleBusiness.com Note: Just remember, Kids: you need to ask your parents before you start a business that would take you into your neighbor's homes.

dog walks advice

by A.C.E. (Adaeze Chigozie Ezekwerre)
(Maryland)

I think you should start out slow.
But you'll need to start out with a smaller dog so that if you are afraid of bigger dogs you can start off small.

by Jammis
(America)

My 11 yr daughter was upset cause her allowance was 15$ per 3 weeks. So she posted ads that said what she liked to do. Her allowance is now 45$ per 2 weeks -- because she likes to cat sit!

It's a fun, easy way for kids to earn money.

Business for Kids: Petsitting and Plant-sitting

by Grace, and Brent
(CA and IN)

There are two authors for this pet and plant-sitting business idea for kids article: Grace from California and Brent from Indiana.

Grace says...

I'd gladly pay a responsible kid to come check on my pets and plants if I'm going to be held up at work, or otherwise going to be away from home for most of a day, weekend, or on vacation.

I'd also pay even if I was home since my super-friendly, medium-sized dogs get so delighted when they meet children who want to play fetch with them and rub their bellies.

They love walks too. Many adults are busy, so there are plenty of dog owners who'd gladly pay a kid to go walk their dog from time to time. :)

I also have some potted indoor plants, outdoor garden flowers and potted patio plants that get sad without daily watering - or twice-daily watering during hot summer months.

I have watering cans and a water hose hooked up in the backyard so that would be an easy 20-30 minute job for a trustworthy kid. (The front/back lawns, bushes, and trees are on timed sprinklers so they do not need any watering.)

My kitty cat is also very friendly and appreciates being fed and played with as well. I love all of my animals and take pretty good care of them - good food, current vet shots, and plenty of hugs/kisses, but it does get really expensive when I have to board them or hire a professional dog/house-sitter.

All of these are ways that kids who know adults in their neighborhood (and whose parents know the adults) can make a nice income helping out.

Brent says...

When people in your neighborhood go on vacation offer to Pet Sit for them so that they don't have to board their animals.

This usually works best during the summer, especially if multiple visits per day will be required. All you have to do is visit the house once or more a day and take care of any needs the particular pet has.

This could be feeding the fish, bird, dog, etc, or letting the dog into the house for a little while if it stays in the yard and garage the rest of the time, cleaning the litter box, etc.

The exact details and care instructions as well as how to get into the house would be worked out ahead of time.
