The world-class facilities at the Nano Alliance
The Innovation Valley Nano Alliance website begins:
"In the heart of East Tennessee, over $2 billion has been invested to create the world's most advanced and extraordinary user facilities for nanoscience research and development - all in one place. We're now 'open for business'."
The Nano Alliance is just one way that Oak Ridge National Lab has gone about the process of re-inventing itself from the place where world-class science is used for the advancement of nuclear weaponry to the place where world class science and technology are used as powerful tools for the advancement of humankind.
In addition to the science and technology being applied to the benefit of all, the components of Innovation Valley - including the Nano Alliance - are a tremendous economic engine for East Tennessee. Some people mutter that that engine is still idling at the stop light, but you can tell by the deep bass rumbling that there's a lot of horse power under that hood!
The full potential of the Nano Alliance and the new direction of Oak Ridge National Lab, together with the University of Tennessee, TVA and the rest of Innovation Valley, can be summed up with a quote by Jeff Wadsworth, the Director of Oak Ridge National Laboratory: "It's not enough to be world-class. We have to be world leaders."
