If you're looking for free music that you can take with you, and the quality of your tunes is important to you, you should check out the 25 free MP3 downloads from eMusic.com.

I just looked around at what members were recommending, and was very pleased with my freebies, which included one of the greatest flamenco guitar albums ever recorded: Luiz Bonfa: "Live in Rio 1959" and the uber-funky 1970s album "They Say I'm Different" by Betty Davis (once married to the famous jazz trumpeter Miles Davis).

Since it's in MP3 format, you can burn it anyway you want to, and play it on any music player, including the iPod.

Free Music in Knoxville: The WDVX Blue Plate Special

Do you love bluegrass music? How about old Johnny Cash-style country? Singer-songwriter folk? Americana rock?

WDVX, which you can hear locally on 89.9 fm and 102.9 fm, is the only radio station I've ever heard that plays the best of them all.

AND, they offer the public a chance to see great music performed live during the noon hour Blue Plate Special every week day and some Saturdays.

It's in the downtown Knoxville Visitor's Center building at 301 South Gay Street.

Check it out! You can buy a good cup of joe and a sandwich or salad while you watch, or just sit back and enjoy some amazing free music in Knoxville! You won't be disappointed.

Free Music in Knoxville: Sundown in the City

Sundown in the City is a free concert series that happens every Thursday night in downtown Knoxville's Market Square Mall.

The concerts feature national acts like Junior Brown, the Drive-By Truckers, Robinella, and many more.

The concerts happen every Thursday during the warm weather months, and feature food vendors and lots of great shops and restaurants in the Mall.

Free Music in Knoxville: Other Major Attractions

The list goes on and it's getting late, so I'll quickly list some more for you to check out, and give you a few more details when I have a chance to write them. Various parts of these events are not free, but generally, the music IS free.

  • Brewer's Jam (dubbed by Metro Pulse "the Hangover of the Year")

  • Saturday Night on the Town, in June, is Knoxville's grand street party, which features live music, food, refreshments and a kid's area.
