Government in Knoxville: City Government



Knoxville City Government

This is the first term of Mayor Bill Haslam. The City Council is made up of nine members, six representatives which are elected from various districts of the city and three at large representatives. The three at large representatives are responsible for the city as a whole and not one particular district.

Government in Knoxville: County Government



County Government

The Knox County Commission is Knox County's legislative assembly. There are a total of nineteen commissioners who are elected to four year terms and Mike Ragsdale is the current Mayor of the County.

The Commission every year elects a chairman and vice chairman and thus adopts various resolutions, ordinances and emergency ordinances to regulate the conduct and affairs of the citizens, and govern the operation of Knox County as a whole. The Commission is the body that sets the county government annual property tax rates and adopts the county budget for that year.

The Knox County Animal Center is the area's primary animal shelter which takes in strays and other animals with a focus towards educating the community on responsible pet ownership, adoption, spay & neuter and other humane issues.

Randy Nichols, Knox County Attorney General has served since August 1992. Prior to that time he was Judge of the Criminal Court for Knox County.

W. Mike Padgett is the current County Clerk, and the Knox County Clerk's office issues marriage, vehicle, hunting and fishing licenses, is responsible for records of automobile titles and marriage licenses as well as collecting taxes for vehicle sales and the various business taxes on behalf of the State Department of Revenue.

Sheriff Tim Hutchison heads the Knox County Sheriff's Office, whose command staff is comprised of both sworn and civilian staff. The Knox County Sheriff's Office is responsible for the operation of four detention facilities. The Detectives General Assignment Division is the primary investigative agency for various property crimes such theft, auto theft, burglary, forgery, fraud, and vandalism and has a clearance rate for these offenses which is well above the national average.
