Knoxville Art Scene: About A1LabArts

Based in Knoxville, Tennessee, A1 Lab Arts is a nonprofit (501[c][3]) organization founded in 1995 by a group of local artists. It is dedicated to multi-disciplinary and experimental exploration of contemporary art issues in all media.

A1Labarts started as an artist co-op with no permanent space back in the early 90's. After floating from place to place, A1 finally got their own space (A1 ArtSpace) in the spring of 2006.

The space is located in the fireproof storage building, at 201 Randolf, just outside Knoxville's old city. The space is reminiscent of New York City warehouse space where you have to seek out to find the art treasure that hides inside.

President of A1, Norman Magden, was the primary reason for A1 moving forward with their own space. Magden has near future plans of incorporating more into the space; the public will have to stay tuned to find out what comes next!

Sara Blair, who is a graduate of UT's School of Fine Art, came on board to A1 in march of this year, and was previously the art director at Agora Gallery on Sutherland Ave.

Blair is a curator for A1 ArtSpace as well as an artist who works mostly through photography.

"I plan on being a part of A1, as well as an artist & organizer in the ever-growing art community in Knoxville," said Blair.

"I'm also working on plans to unite the First Friday events and make them even better than they already are. I hope to get the city involved a bit more to advance the events."

About the A1LabArts 4 Corners Artists

Al Stark has a bachelors degree in fine art from Northern Illinois University.

"I have been making things that fly and drawing the world around me since i was a kid. Over the years I have gone from failed experiments with lego building blocks (when i was little), to more productive sessions with toothpicks, straws and paper (when i was a little older), to my best results with bamboo and paper (current).

"I love the simple, beauty, power and function of paper kites. I also admire the straightforward and personal woodblock prints by the Japanese artists of the creative print movement in early twentieth century Japan. Together, they have inspired me to create my own paper kites and woodblock prints, which hopefully carry a similar personal theme of fragile, simple beauty."

Multimedia art by Greg Lendeck

Multi-media work by Lendeck

Greg Lendeck Artist, Teacher, Designer, and Tinkerer Greg Lendeck, who holds a B.S. in Studio Art, a B.F.A. in Sculpture, and a M.F.A. in Sculpture, works two- and three-dimensionally in various media while living in the fourth dimension.

His work was described to us in this fun sentence:

"During a moment of perfect lucidity, Lendeck had an epiphany that loosened the tenuous grasp he holds on his sanity just enough to allow him to create representations of the interlocking parts of the seen and unseen universes - without the usual self-consciousness and common sense that most people would feel."

Lendeck has shown widely at various venues nationally, and for ten years he has taught art at the high school and college level. He currently resides, blissfully, with his wife and children in upstate New York.

Christian Tribastone was trained as a printmaker at Alfred University, and now uses interdisciplinary mediums to explore conventional notions of space in relation to our corporeal existence.

Whether sculpture, painting, printmaking or photography, he uses the media that excites him to produce work that does the same.

Christian Tribastone has a Master of Science for Teachers in Art Education from RIT and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Alfred University. He is originally from Rochester, New York, but he currently enjoys teaching art in an elementary school in Northern Virginia.

Tribastone bakes a killer carrot cake and refuses to shave his beard.

Her work has been exhibited throughout the US in galleries and public spaces, including the Knoxville Museum of Art, the Swope Museum of American Art, and Period Gallery.

Sara is the recipient of numerous awards and grants for her media work including the Knoxville Legacy Grant Award for InterdisciplinaryArt. Currently Sara heads the studio art program at Renaissance School in Charlottesville, Virginia.
